Sedation Dentistry in Sacramento: Separating the Myths From the Facts

July 3, 2026

By Michael Narodovich, DMD, Sacramento Dental Medicine — Antelope, CA.

Sedation dentistry has a bit of an image problem. Movies and secondhand stories have left a lot of people with the wrong idea about what it actually involves. So before you decide whether it's right for you, let's clear the air. Here are the most common myths we hear from patients across the Sacramento area — and the facts behind them.

New to the topic? Start with our complete sedation dentistry overview.

Myth #1: "Sedation Means I'll Be Knocked Out Completely"

Fact: For the large majority of dental sedation, you stay awake. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation all keep you conscious and able to respond — you simply feel deeply relaxed. Being fully unconscious is general anesthesia, which is reserved for specific surgical situations and isn't what most patients receive.

Myth #2: "Sedation Is Only for Major Surgery"

Fact: Sedation helps with everyday dentistry too. Plenty of our patients use it for routine fillings, cleanings, or a couple of crowns — simply because it makes the visit calmer. It's just as appropriate for someone who's nervous about a checkup as it is for a longer restorative appointment.

Myth #3: "It's Not Safe"

Fact: When provided by a trained, permitted dentist who monitors you throughout, sedation has a strong safety track record. In California, administering sedation requires specific permits from the Dental Board of California, plus monitoring equipment and emergency readiness. We review your medical history first and watch your vital signs the entire time. Safety comes down to provider training — which is why your choice of dentist matters more than anything.

Myth #4: "I Can Just Power Through My Anxiety"

Fact: Willpower rarely beats real dental fear, and white-knuckling an appointment often makes the next one harder. Sedation breaks that cycle. For many people it's the difference between avoiding the dentist for years and getting comfortably back on track.

Myth #5: "There's Only One Kind of Sedation"

Fact: There are several, and the right one depends on you:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): light, breathed in, wears off fast — you can usually drive yourself home.
  • Oral conscious sedation: a pill taken beforehand for a deeper, settled calm; you'll need a driver.
  • IV sedation: the deepest, most adjustable option, delivered through a small line — ideal for high anxiety or longer procedures. (More in The Benefits of IV Sedation.)

Myth #6: "Sedation Is Just for Extreme Cases"

Fact: You don't need a diagnosed phobia to benefit. A sensitive gag reflex, trouble getting numb, difficulty sitting still, or simply wanting a more pleasant visit are all perfectly good reasons to ask about it.

So… Is It Right for You?

Sedation is worth a conversation if you:

  • Dread or delay dental visits
  • Have had a rough experience in the past
  • Gag easily during treatment
  • Need several things done and would rather not spread them across many visits
  • Want to feel calm instead of tense in the chair

The next step is simple: a no-pressure consultation where we listen to your concerns and match you with the right option.

A Few Quick Questions, Answered

Does sedation hurt? No. It's paired with local anesthetic, so the area is numb while you relax. The nitrous mask and a small IV line are the only sensations, and both are minor.

How long does it take to wear off? Nitrous clears in minutes. Oral and IV sedation linger longer, so you'll rest before heading home with your driver and take it easy the rest of the day.

Will my insurance help? It depends on your plan and why sedation is recommended. Our team will check your benefits and explain any costs before you decide.
