Sacramento Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but the main reason for getting a tooth extracted is when tooth decay destroys enough of the tooth's structure to render the tooth non-restorable. Tooth removal is necessary when decay or an abscessed tooth is so severe that no other treatment will cure the infection. Removing the tooth can help prevent the infection from spreading to other areas of your mouth. Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are also common types of extractions, as are removal of permanent teeth to aid in orthodontic treatments.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom tooth extractions are one of the most common and well-known types of tooth extraction. Your wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in a person's mouth and are the least important to good oral health. Problems with your third molars can occur when your jaw is too small to hold them or they force other teeth out of alignment.

Had an excellent experience with Sacramento Dental Medicine, it had been eight years since I had been to a dentist and they helped me through my anxiety and reservations about getting back on track. I had some cavities filled in and a wisdom tooth removed with absolutely no pain. The dentist was attentive and careful (and pleasantly speedy). I am scheduled to go back soon to finish up some work and I am almost looking forward to it-- haha.

Post-Extraction Healing

Following the extraction of a tooth, a blood clot forms in the socket, usually within an hour. Bleeding is common throughout this first hour, but its likelihood decreases quickly as time passes, and bleeding has usually stopped after 24 hours. The raw open wound overlying the dental socket takes about a week to heal. Thereafter, the socket will gradually fill in with soft gum tissue over a period of about one to two months. Final closure of the socket with bony remodeling can take six months or longer.

The dentist at our Sacramento dental office will make your tooth extraction as comfortable and painless as possible. Some patients who really hate the idea of getting a teeth removed choose to undergo conscious sedation  for the duration of their treatment.
