Are Electric Toothbrushes Really Better Than Manual Brushes?

There have been multiple studies comparing the effectiveness of manual brushes as opposed to electric brushes. These studies are sometimes sponsored by toothbrush manufacturers, however in general we're big believers in the benefits electric toothbrushes offer over regular toothbrushes. As this writer is fond of saying "electric toothbrushes made a believer out of me!"

Although not all electric brushes are the same, these studies conclude that in general electric brushes are more efficient in controlling plaque than manual brushes. Studies also demonstrate a lower risk of gingivitis and gum disease in people who use electric. Theoretically, you can do a very good brushing with a regular hand brush, but the movements of an electric brush make the task faster, easier and more effective.

It is also noteworthy that several electric brushes (such as Sonicare) produce sonic vibrations that are difficult to mimic with a hand brush! Other electric brushes like Oral-B and Rotadent have small heads that help you access those hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. This aspect is extremely important when you are talking about someone with orthodontic braces or a history of gum disease.

Cost is certainly one of the main hurdles to everyone owning an electric toothbrush. However, when you factor in the costs associated with poor dental hygiene, upgrading the tools you need to maintain a healthy mouth is really a no-brainer, in our opinion.

Some patients have inquired about where to find cheap electric toothbrushes. We all have our favorites and really the decision should come down to which electric toothbrush is right for you? Do you want something that's effective and portable? Are you interested in a brush designed with multiple settings? If you have a small mouth you might be interested in a toothbrush with a tapered or angled brush head, for those hard-to-reach places.

With so many products on the market it really comes down to you. Of course, our staff would be happy to advise you when you come in for your regularly scheduled cleaning.  Make an appointment with us today and we'll get you straightened out!
